The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada | Guelph pet photographer
I took two weeks off in July to unplug and spend some quality time with my family. It was so nice to slow down, and not worry about the day-to-day tasks like packing lunches and setting alarms. And I loved seeing my son every day! This year we did a “staycation” and planned a series of outings for our time off — we went to the beach, visited with friends and family, went on a few hikes, took in a movie and my favourite, visited The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada.
This is such a special place. Located on 100 acres of gorgeous farmland just outside of Guelph, Ontario, The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a non-profit refuge for donkeys and mules who have been neglected or abused, or who can no longer be cared for by their owners. This is a peaceful place and it has a serenity about it — you can feel it the moment you step out of the car — and the more than 60 animals that call it home are gentle, free to roam and it is clear, very happy and content.
This is a wonderful experience for all ages. My son loved brushing the donkeys and the donkeys in turn, loved being shown affection and getting pets. On several occasions I got the “arm bump” only to find a donkey nose requesting scratches and nuzzles.
The property is so beautiful and tranquil. There are trails to explore and a spot for a picnic lunch beside a pond.
I’ve never spent time with donkeys before, and the experience really touched my heart. They are sweet, gentle and dignified creatures, and such a variety live at the sanctuary — we met young ones and old ones (we loved Summer, who is 43!). I also enjoyed their names, which are displayed on their collars. From Earl Grey to Davinci, Sable and Apollo, each is memorable.
There are plenty of learning opportunities on the farm, and the volunteers and staff are really wonderful. The donkey puppet was a big hit!The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a charitable organization, and admission is by donation with proceeds going towards the care of the animals (suggested admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children). Not only is this a fun, affordable and educational activity for families, but your visit also helps animals in need. We loved our experience and plan to visit again soon!
