Milo | Best friends at Kerncliff Park
Goldendoodle Milo and her mom were both celebrating milestone birthdays, and to mark the occasion, they got in touch (well, Milo’s mom did!) for a fall photography session. They love trail walking together and have been on many hikes around the GTA. They were excited about exploring a new area, so they travelled from Toronto to Burlington. I hung out with these best friends at Kerncliff Park – one of my favourite local spots. Together, we captured some special moments.

One of the things I love about Milo is her resting expression. It’s kind of a “help me” crossed with “wtf.” It’s pretty adorable and funny! I did get her smiling, but my goal is to capture the authenticity and character of pets. And this is Milo, just as she is, and how her mom always wants to remember her!
Here’s that classic Milo look:
Milo’s mom wanted most of the session to be focused on Milo, but she did want a few images of them together. She was uncomfortable about having her photograph taken though, which is totally normal! The way I approach this is to get people and pets together in a nice spot and then just let them interact. I often tell the owner to look at their dog, rather than at me, which helps avoid some of the awkward, smile-at-the-camera moments. I prefer being a bystander, and I approach pet and people photos like an observer, rather than inserting myself into the moment.
Milo’s mom ordered a really cute 10×30 storyboard featuring her four favourite images. One of them with a classic Milo expression, of course!
