It’s always so hard when bad things happen to our pets. They are such simple and giving creatures, so when something malicious strikes them for no reason, it’s hard to come to grips with it. Stevie is only seven, and was recently diagnosed with mammary cancer. It quickly spread to her lungs and now she’s giving her devoted owner Rachel as many extra days together as possible.
Mammary cancer is the third most common cancer in cats, but the average onset is 10 to 12 years. And “intact” cats (those that haven’t been spayed) have a greater chance of developing this type of cancer. In fact, spaying a cat before six months of age and prior to their first heat can reduce the risk by 91 per cent.
Trying to understand why Stevie has fallen victim to this disease is made so much more difficult because of her young age and the fact that she’s spayed.
Rachel adopted Stevie at the age of one from the Ottawa Humane Society. Stevie is a sweet soul and very much a regal lady. She loves her orange chair, laying on Rachel’s desk while she works and treats of course.
Enjoy these special days together Stevie and Rachel – you will remember them forever.
