Celebrating Nixie | Pet and family photography in Burlington

Dog portrait of senior dog on Burlington, Ontario trail in fall.

I met senior Nixie, 14, and her family at the very end of November — just look at the wonderful colours we still had for our session in a natural area in the suburbs! At the time, Nixie was in rapidly declining health — she had stopped eating and was pretty thin … I teared up a few times during our time together. Despite her physical appearance, she was still as curious and happy as ever to explore the trail off leash and put her sniffer to the ground in true German shorthaired pointer fashion. She was a lovely old girl and reminded me very much of an earlier session I had with another GSP, Gracie.

Now, as a rule of thumb, when the number of people greatly outnumber the pets, I refer people to a great family photographer in the area. I think I even suggested it to this family. But gosh, am I glad they wanted to stick with me for pet and family photography in Burlington — these kids (all four of them!) were just fantastic. So sweet, great listeners, and happy to be involved and make memories with Nixie. They knew she wouldn’t be with them for much longer.

Nixie passed away just after Christmas. Each dog I photograph for my Celebration Sessions leaves an imprint on my heart — I remember each and every one. I will always remember Nixie’s soft brown eyes and her gentle nature. And I only spent 90 minutes with her — the memories she gave her family are priceless. I was so happy to create a custom album for them to flip through again and again.
